ALEX McDOWELL

Associate Professor, Production, IMD, iMAP

USC School of Cinematic Arts

Alex McDowell is one of the most innovative and influential designers working in narrative media. With the impact of his ideas extending far beyond his background in cinema, he advocates an immersive design process that acknowledges the key role of world building in storytelling.

In his 30+ years as a narrative designer, McDowell has worked with directors Terry Gilliam, Tim Burton, David Fincher, Zack Snyder and Steven Spielberg, amongst many others.

From 1999-2001 Alex McDowell worked with Steven Spielberg to design and develop a world for the film Minority Report, prior to a completed script. The process that evolved changed the nature of film design from analogue to digital, and profoundly affected the nature of digital production, with a radical shift towards a non-linear workflow. Since then McDowell’s work has build on the dynamic relationship between creativity and emergent technologies.

McDowell recently designed Man Of Steel, Zack Snyder and Chris Nolan’s retelling of the Superman origin story, where he built the holistic world of Krypton, its history and its integration with Earth.

McDowell is associate professor in the Interactive Media, Production, and Media Arts and Practice (iMAP) divisions at the School of Cinematic Arts, USC, where he is creative director of the World Building Media Lab and the 5D Institute. As visiting artist at MIT’s Media Lab from 2006-2011 he designed the robot opera Death and the Powers for composer Tod Machover. He is a Getty Research Institute scholar, and a member of the AMPAS SciTech Council. In 2006, he was awarded Royal Designer for Industry by the UK’s Royal Society of Arts.

Alex McDowell is co-founder and creative director at 5D | Organization, a cellular and interdisciplinary transmedia design practice.

Moses Znaimer’s ideacity is Canada’s top gathering of thinkers and doers – a constellation of talented individuals assembled for three days each June for a festival of talk, thought, and conversation. This is a unique species of annual conference, where innovative people convene to say important things about the world. The Rio Theatre is excited to be participating in this year’s inspiring edition of ideacity via live stream, broadcasting this inspiring conference to West Coasters daily.

While ideacity has always talked tech, now it’s the Main Event – Moses is assembling a Gaggle of Geeks to speak on top tech trends. This year the focus is on technology as ideacity serves up a stunning panorama of dreams and schemes that, only a few years ago, would have been considered the stuff of science fiction. But now they’re actually happening in the real world – and ideacity brings you face-to-face with the geeks, nerds, and brainiacs responsible!

[[Show as slideshow]]
In Syd’s own words:

I’m supposing a pronounciation pun of ‘INTO IT’ as a description of why we design, why we are ‘in to it’ as professional, creative people.

The premise of the presentation, using examples of my own work throughout my fifty-plus year career, is that ‘STORY’ is the initial inspiration starter for ideas. I contend that ideas need a rationale and I have found that having a ‘story’ premise is key. STORIES take place in the STORY WORLD. I make the point that movies are to story telling what the symphony orchestra is to music, the most elaborate format we have for coaxing belief. Once we establish the STORY and the WORLD in which the STORY takes place we need to furnish that WORLD with all the stuff we have in our familiar world. That in turn leads to my presentation of ‘movies that were never made’ as I threaded my way through the strange world of movie production. As an ‘almost never made’ movie, BLADERUNNER deserves to be exploited, especially since Sir Ridley Scott has recently gone on record as announcing that he will direct a ‘sequel’ to his iconic 8O’s noir film.

SYD’S BIO:

Sydney Jay Mead was born in St. Paul Minnesota, July 18th, 1933 but spent only a few years there before moving to what would be the second of many homes throughout the western United States prior to graduating from High School in Colorado Springs, Colorado in 1951. After serving a three year enlistment in the U.S. Army, Syd Mead continued on to the Art Center School in Los Angeles, (now the Art Center College of Design, Pasadena) where he graduated with great distinction in June of 1959. He was immediately recruited by the Ford Motor Company’s Advanced Styling Studio under the management of Elwood Engle which he left after 2 years in order to accept a variety of assignments to illustrate books and catalogues for large corporate entities such as United State Steel, Celanese, Allis Chalmers and Atlas Cement. In 1970, he launched Syd Mead Inc. in Detroit, Michigan to accommodate the high caliber of offers he received, most notably the PHILIPS ELECTRONICS. As the principal of his newly formed corporation in the 1970’s, Syd Mead spent about a third of his time in Europe primarily to provide designs and illustrations for Philips of Holland. Together with his roster of major American clients, he continues to make his creative mark, internationally. Throughout the 1970’s and 1980’s, Syd Mead, Inc. provided architectural renderings both interior and exterior, for such clients as Intercontinental Hotels, 3D International, Harwood Taylor & Associates, Don Ghia, and Gresham & Smith, to mention a few. His architectural clients have recently expanded to include the New York firm of Philip Koether Architects for which he designed the interior of a Manhattan eatery. Design activity accelerated after the corporate and personal move to California in 1975. In 1979, projects began to include work with most major studios, on such feature films as Star Trek: The Motion Picture, followed by, Bladerunner, TRON, 2010, Short Circuit, Aliens, Time Cop, Johnny Mnemonic, and most recently, “Mission Impossible-3” starring Tom Cruise for director J.J. Abrams. Beginning in 1983, Syd began to develop close working relationships with a number of major Japanese corporate clients, including; Sony, Minolta, Dentsu, Dyflex, Tiger, Seibu, Mitsukoshi, Bandai, NHK and Honda as well as contributing to two Japanese film projects, The New Yamato and Crises 2050. In the 1990s’, Syd supplied designs for two Japanese toy icons, “The New Yamato” and all eight robot characters in the new Turn-A Gundam mobile suite series which were also seen as characters in Television shows.

With transportation design as his first love, Syd Mead seldom misses an opportunity to provide his unique blend of futurism and believability to those projects consisting of a vehicle that travels from “A” to ‘B”. Whether it be designing solar powered unicycles, show cars, luxury yachts, cruise ships, the interiors of private 747’s, or interplanetary spacecraft, each receives the same attention to detail within a perfectly designed scenario. This combination has become a Syd Mead trademark and has been seen in everything from concept cars for Ford Motor Company to futuristic “Hypervans” which have been the subject of his latest full color illustrations.

Syd Mead continues an active schedule of one man shows, which started with an invitation to exhibit at Documenta 6, Kassel, West Germany in 1973. His work has since been exhibited in Japan, Italy, California, and Spain. In 1983 in response to an in invitation from Chrysler Corporation to be a guest speaker to their design staff, Syd Mead assembled a selection of slides to visually enhance his lecture. The resulting presentation was a resounding success and has since been expanded and enhanced with computer generated imagery specifically assembled at the requests of such clients as Disney, Carnegie Mellon University, Purdue, Pratt University, the Society of Illustrators., and many others both academic and corporate around the world. In March of 2010, Syd completed a four city tour in Australia to capacity audiences at each venue.

Always an advocate of new technologies, Syd Mead has expanded his horizons to include computer illustrations and graphics by mastering a variety of Softwares. Beginning with the official poster of the 1991 Concours d’Elegance “Eyes on the Classics” in Detroit, Michigan, Mr. Mead has attempted to utilize the latest in available techniques to their best advantage. In 1993, a digital gallery comprised of 50 examples of his art with interface screens designed by Syd Mead became one of the first CD ROM’s released in Japan in 1992 and in 2004 in response to many requests, cooperated with the Gnomon School of Visual Effects to produce a 4 volume, “How To” DVD series titled, “TECHNIQUES OF SYD MEAD” which continues to be sought after by designers around the world.

His one man show, “Cavalcade to the Crimson Castle” consisting of 114 original paintings and illustrations, enjoyed a three month showing at the Center for the Arts in San Francisco in the Fall of 1996. The highlight of the show turned out to be Syd’s presentation and lecture attracted an audience that exceeded the available capacity of the auditorium. Subsequent personal appearances at schools across the country have attracted record numbers. “SYD MEAD PROGRESSIONS” a travelling one-man-show of his work, is now in the planning stage to mark the 40th anniversary his work. This touring exhibition is currently scheduled to premier in Glendale, California at the Forest Lawn Gallery of Fine Arts in January 2012.

In February 1998, Syd Mead relocated his studio to Pasadena, California, where he continues to be involved in a variety of design projects. including publication of two books, SENTURY,(in 2001), and SENTURY II in 2010 as well as a documentary of his career with director Joaquin Montalvan, “VISUAL FUTURIST”, released in May of 2007 on DVD. Mead attributes success in an astonishing range of creative activities to the premise that imagination…the idea, supersedes technique. “There are more people in the world who make things than there are people who think of things to make.”

Join us Wednesday, February 13th, as Vancouver ACM SIGGRAPH proudly presents members of the VFX team from Image Engine speaking about their work in one of 2012′s most critically acclaimed films: ZERO DARK THIRTY!

Image Engine provided over 300 shots for Kathryn Bigelow’s critically acclaimed Zero Dark Thirty, a chronicle of the decade-long hunt for al-Qaeda terrorist leader Osama bin Laden. It was of critical importance to the filmmakers that the CG elements and general filmmaking conditions were as true to events as possible, to support the integrity of the movie – with all the details coming under rigorous scrutiny. The crew had to dig deep to find aesthetic solutions within these parameters, with very little creative license to change the nature of things to make them ‘work’.

The work involved digital environments, hard surface animation, compositing and FX. In addition to creating hero assets such as the computer generated Stealth Hawk helicopters, the crew also digitally augmented the bustling military encampments, which included extensive matte paintings as well as the addition of upwards of 400 digital soldiers, lots of ground vehicles, helicopters, planes and all the auxiliary dust that each of these would kick up in the dirty, dusty environments.

Chris Harvey, the Visual Effects Supervisor for the production will discuss how the team at Image Engine overcame the challenges of integrating CG in the “no-light” zone from early concept and development to final shot breakdowns.

Joining us will be:
Chris Harvey – VFX Supervisor
Geoff Anderson – VFX Producer

[[Show as slideshow]]
Come join us at District 319 on Thursday, November 1st, as Vancouver ACM SIGGRAPH present Sony Imageworks Vancouver’s Supervising Animator Mike Beaulieu speaking about the superb animation work he and his team came up with for 2012′s successful reboot, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN!

Bringing a CG character to life is no easy task especially when faced with an iconic character such as Spider-Man, and especially when dealing with a fresh reboot of an already successful franchise. That’s what the animators on Amazing Spider-Man were faced with when they began production back in May 2011. Not only would they be handling a full CG version of the famous web-slinger in various shots, but they were also dealing with bringing a new CG character to life, the iconic villain “The Lizard”. Both of these characters offered challenges in their own right, and in this presentation, Mike will take you through the process of bringing them to life. Through various sequence and shot breakdowns he will discuss the challenges they faced both creatively and technically, the obstacles they overcame, and share some behind the scenes stories as they went through the animation process on The Amazing Spider-Man.

Mike Beaulieu’s Bio:

I studied Classical Animation at Sheridan College back in 1997 and started out working at CORE Digital Pictures in Toronto on various TV series. After 4 years in TV, and working on Disney’s “The Wild”, my career led me to the USA in 2006 where I worked at ILM on the first Transformers film. I am a big Transformers geek so that was definitely a highlight for me. After that I went to LA and worked at Rhythm + Hues, Sony Imageworks, and DreamWorks Animation. Between my time at R+H and Sony, I had my own previs business working on an unreleased CG feature. There I learned a lot about camera work, staging, pacing, and editing that would come in very handy on Amazing Spider-man. In early 2010 Sony opened a studio in Vancouver and contacted me to come out as a Lead Animator for The Smurfs. I jumped at the chance to be able to continue doing the job I love, but still be in my home country. I’ve been there ever since having worked on The Smurfs, The Smurfs: A Christmas Carol, and then Amazing Spider-Man. Back when I was in high school, I originally wanted to be a comic book artist, but that never panned out so getting onto Amazing Spider-Man as a Supervising Animator was a dream come true. To say I am a Spidey fan is an understatement, but I was extremely enthusiastic about this project and very proud of the results the entire team achieved. I am currently working on Sam Raimi’s “OZ: The Great and Powerful” at Sony Imageworks Vancouver.
